What is onpage SEO?

Onpage SEO also known as onsite SEO is a method to optimize your website to get ranked higher on search engines. If you don’t know, what SEO is, read this! What is SEO? Onpage SEO can be divided into 2 parts. The technical SEO and the content optimization. Offsite/offpage SEO has more to do with link building / backlinks. If you want to know, what offsite SEO is, read this! What is offsite SEO? So to get ranked high on Google as fast as possible, you have to do both.

content

Content

Your content has to meet certain requirements, so that the search engines prefer your content over other contents. The length of the text should be at least 300 words and the keyword density should be about 2,5%. Besides, it has to be your own content, you are writing. No copies. The page title and meta description also should have the keyword. Now it starts getting a little bit more technical. Meta description is a HTML tag, which you put on the header of the HTML file. If you use images like me, it has to be properly named with keywords. The URL of your blog article should contain keywords, too. Internal linking is also important. In this blog article for example, I’ve referred to my other articles like offsite SEO and at the end of this article, I will give your more articles for further reading.

Pagespeed

Technical SEO

With this Google Tool, you can check, how fast your website loads. If it takes too much time to load, you have to optimize it then. Either HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Cache, pictures etc. The faster your website or blog gets loaded, the better it is ranked. When you use pictures, make sure, that those pictures get compressed before uploading it. I forgot to compress an image and the PageSpeed score was below 50 instantly, although that picture was only 4 MB, but after optimizing it, it was only about 200 KB.

There are also nice tools to use like Google Analytics. After implementing it on your website, it can measure, how many visitors you have on your website. How long they stay on your website and where they come from etc. Pretty useful insights to find out, which SEO move works best for you.

So that’s basically it. To stay up to date, just like my Facebook Fanpage: The Doan’s Blog. What is offsite SEO?

offpage seo

What is offsite SEO?

If you don’t know, what SEO is, read this! What is SEO? Offpage/offsite SEO are techniques, which are out of the website. Backlinks are the most important part. The more backlinks you have, the higher you will get ranked on the search engine. Not only the quantity plays a role, but also the quality of the backlink. It is mainly determined by the domain authority of the website.

backlink

This is, how a backlink looks like. It’s a link from another website to your website. So if I click on the link www.denisdoan.com, it would refer to my website. As simple as that. In order to get backlinks, you have to build it. That’s why it is called link building. Pretty straightforward. It’s also possible to buy links, but these kinds of artificially getting links are called black hat SEO. You will get punished by the search engine by getting your ranking lowered.

Before moving on, I will tell you the types of links. No follow links are links, that doesn’t improve the search ranking. It is implemented in HTML and it looks like this: <a href=“http://www.denisdoan.com/“ rel=“nofollow>Denis Doan</a>. So you just add this attribute rel to the a tag. It is like a tool for webmasters to prevent spamming. Links on Social Media like Facebook, Twitter etc. are nofollow links, so they don’t have an impact on SEO. The normal links as you can see above are the follow links. They have an influence on the search ranking.

Next, there are inbound and outbound links. Inbound links are backlinks, that are from other websites referring to your website. Like on the 1st example, I had an inbound link from Crunchbase. Outbound links are links on your website referring to other websites. I could put here a link to blogging referring to a Wikipedia article. Last but not least to confuse you more, there are also internal links. Those links refer to another blog article on the blog. Later there are internal links referring to other related blog articles of mine. External links are like outbound links. These are links on your website referring to other websites.

To get links your content should be so good, that other webmaster wants to refer to your content. Guest blogging is also a way to build links, but it is more artificial than natural. Social media does play a role in SEO, but not that much, but the more your content/website get shared/followed the better it is. Social bookmarking sites are helpful too: Stumbleupon. Hint: That was an external/outbound link. So that was a quick introduction to offsite SEO. I hope, I could clarify a little bit. If not, feel free to contact me.

What is keyword research used for?

keywords

Keyword research

Keyword research is used for e.g. in content marketing, SEO and SEA. If you want to know, what SEO is, read this: What is SEO? Keyword is a search term, that you look up in Google e.g. best bars Los Angeles. There are many types of keywords. One of them are generic keywords. These are keywords, which have a broad scope and nothing specific to a niche, location etc. For example SEO is a generic keyword. The other type of keywords are longtail keywords like the example above. Generic keywords are mostly very competitive, because many other people are already using it. That’s why for a newbie, it is recommendable to use longtail keywords.

It is very good to find out, what kind of topic your potential reader want to read, so that you can get targeted visitors to your website. So it is a good way to do market research. There is a tool to find out, which keyword has much search traffic on Google. You also can find out, how much competition already exists for that specific keyword. This tool is provided by Google itself and it is called keyword planner, which is free to use. Very handy!

keyword planner

Here is an example using the keyword planner. As you can see 100k to 1m people search worldwide for this topic SEO. The good thing about it, there is not much competition too, which means it is relatively easy to get your content ranked high with the keyword SEO.

keyword planner 2

You also can specify the location for example in your area to find out, how popular the keyword is. As you can see there are between 1k to 10k people search for it per month in Los Angeles and there is more competition in this field, which means, there is more content about it. It also can mean, that there are many SEO professionals and SEO agencies in Los Angeles. The higher the competition, the more difficult it will be to be ranked high on the search engine. There are many search engines out there e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. to name a few.

A similar tool is called Google Trends and it looks like this: Google Trend

As you can see, currently US Americans are very interested in Trump administration. There are also more tools e.g. Moz, Google Search Console etc.

So this is how keyword research looks like. Quick and easy. To stay up to date, just like my Facebook Fanpage: The Doan’s Blog. Further reading: What is SEO? What is SEM? What is Digital Marketing?

Being an expat in Dublin

expats

Ireland is a great country for expats. All the big US Americans are here. That’s why it is also known as the European version of Sillicon Valley. For example the Headquarter of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Dell, VMware, Kingston, Intel, Adobe, Symantic, Airbnb etc. just to name a few. Ireland also uses € Euros as a currency, but North Ireland uses £ British pounds, because only North Ireland is part of the UK, so Brexit only effects them. Please keep that in mind for visa issues later on.

Because I’m a German citizen, I don’t need any visa or work permit. It’s like I’m working in my home country, which is very convenient and it saves money, but as an EU citizen, you also have to do some paperwork. You just have to apply for the PPS number and Bank account. It has to be an Irish Bank account, not any EU Bank account, which requires you a little bit more paperwork. In order to get the PPS number, you have to provide your passport, ID and evidence of address. A tenancy agreement can be regarded as proof of evidence. Please bear in mind, that the opening hours of such authority is only during normal Business hours, which means, it is recommended to apply for the PPS number before your start date. In order to open a bank account you have to provide your passport and your PPS number. That is basically it. Same like local citizen.

Tax in Ireland is more straight forward than in Germany. If your salary is below 32 800€, the tax will be 20%. If it is above this limit, it will be 40%. For example the net salary of annually 32 000€ is the same like 37 000€ in Germany. Actually you can not compare it like this way, because the health insurance in Germany is pretty, so you do not need a private health insurance. So it is like you get, what you paid for. Having a private health in Germany is most of the case just a status symbol like having a fancy car.

The living cost is pretty high for low quality. That’s why Ireland got money from the EU like other poor countries. Since the joining of the European Union in 1973 it received €50bn, but it a few years ago, but a few years ago, it started contributing to the EU. There are many old houses. It looks like the war is recently over or something, so not very inviting to stay there. So if you want to stay in very pretty, modern and well designed apartments, it is better to go to Zürich. They have the best apartments I’ve ever seen in my life. It looks like paradise, although I have no clue, how a paradise supposes to look like. Haha. The average salary for graduates is €25 000, which is pretty low compared to Germany with €44 000, which is about 75% higher in Germany. Although the tax in Ireland is a little bit lower than in Germany, it can’t compensate that big difference. The rent price in Dublin for a double room is on average 1000€ per month, which is about 50% till 70% higher than in Germany. Considering the low salary and the high living cost, Germany is more than 100% better than Dublin. With the low salary and high living cost, you only can afford bread and water. Because I have more than 1 income stream, I could afford beer sometimes 😀

In terms of infrastructure, Dublin has no metro to the city center from the airport. Only buses. German cities with similar amount of population have already a metro to the city center. So Dublin is falling about half century from behind. The whole city has only 3 lines and the buses don’t have air conditioners. The good thing about it, you don’t need to go to sauna any more. German cities with that size of Dublin have at least 10 metro lines. You might argue, that I could buy a car, but I will only buy a car, if I know, where I will settle down, but after being to 22 different countries, I still have no idea, where to settle down :D. It is really difficult to find a better place than Germany. Germany is one of the richest country in Europe and in the world. It is hard to beat that. That’s why Germany is the 2nd immigration country right after the US. I’m happy not being an expat in Dublin / Ireland any more. It’s not easy to get used to that kind of low life quality.

Although Ireland is part of the EU, it uses a British socket, which is quite confusing.

British socket

So do not forget to take an adapter with you. There are quite many Brazilians, which is surprising, when I arrived there. In Germany I have not met any of them. From what I have heard from them, it is easier to get an Irish visa and you are allowed to work part time while studying English, which is similar to Germany. I also noticed, that there are more US American tourists than Australian tourists. In Budapest there are almost only Australian tourists. Very interesting …

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing also is known as online marketing mostly in German speaking countries compromises all types of marketing, which are executed online. So what is the difference between the traditional marketing like print media vs. digital marketing?

  1. It is way more efficient. That’s why the ROI is higher. In other words, as an example, you need to spend way less money to reach audiences. Sending mails to people, who are likely to be interested in your products or services cost a certain amount of money to send it. With Emails it is even for free.
  2. It is faster. Because time is money, being faster is also valuable. Besides first come, first serve. When you are faster than your competitor on the market, you can sell your products or services first.
  3. Higher visibility. It is way easier to reach 1000 people with digital marketing than the traditional one. For example, there are many Facebook groups out there with thousands of members. Just one single promotion of your product or services and you already reached these many people.
  4. It is measurable. You can see right away, how many clicks your ads has or with web analytics, you can see, how many visitors your website has and it looks like this: trafficSo this week I have about 4000 visitors on my website. It also can report me, where the visitors come from like from which country or from which source like Google, Facebook, Pinterest etc.

Now, you have a quick understanding, why Digital Marketing is better than the traditional one. Here comes some types of Digital Marketing:

  1. SEO stands for search engine optimization, so that you can be ranked higher on search engines like Google. I’ve already written a blog article about it, so check it out: What is SEO?
  2. Content marketing can be any kind of content like text, audio and video for example blogs, youtube videos, tutorials, podcasts etc. So it is mostly informative like explanations, tutorials etc. or entertaining making yourself competent to persuade potential customers to purchase the products or services.
  3. Social media marketing is used on social media platforms like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Quora, LinkedIn etc. not only to attract customers, but also to attract potential employees, inform the public. So social media marketing has also a PR function and much more. The biggest social media company, I know, is Facebook with about 2.1b users. Only Google has more users, but Google exists already a decade earlier. Within social media marketing, it also exists influencer marketing. Influencers are people, who have a big influence on a certain niche. For example one of the top Instagram influencer Rachel Brathen with 2.1m followers charge $25 000 per post.
  4. Email marketing is used for example to inform customers about the latest products or services news, but also for promoting contents. It’s not only good for sending newsletters, but it can also be more individualized.
  5. Online advertisements are also known as pay per click, where Businesses have to pay a certain amount of money, if users click on the advertisement, which is really effective, because you only have to pay, when a potential customer is interested in, what you have to offer.
  6. Affiliate marketing is also an effective way to increase sales, because you only have to pay to the affiliate, if he or she is able to make sales for you. Affiliates can be influencers, bloggers, youtubers etc.

The list is definitely not complete. It is just to give you a quick overview over digital marketing. I hope you liked it. In order to stay up to date just like my Facebook page The Doan’s blog. Here is another related article: What is SEM?

7 things to love about your long distance relationship

long distance relationship

By Elephant on the Road

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and I’m feeling very romantic. I finally have a date to see my boyfriend and after 5 months of distance, we will see each other again on February 18th. Which had me thinking… I should totally write a post about things to love about your long distance relationship. Because we all need encouraging words here and there. And what’s the best way to do it? By remembering all those great things that come with being in a long-distance relationship.

7 Things To Love About Your Long Distance Relationship. Relationship tips. LDR. Long distance relationships. Elephant on the Road.

THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT YOUR LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP

1. YOU TRUST YOUR PARTNER

Being in a long-distance relationship can bring many insecurities at the beginning. The constant ‘what ifs’ can make the situation even worst. But everything gets better with time. For many can be hard to trust easily and being so far from your significant others force you to do it. I mean, if you are starting this relationship you must believe in your partner and trust that he or she won’t break your heart.

What other choices you have anyway? Go crazy with jealousy? Start fights over small things? That’s not healthy, and it makes the whole relationship harder to maintain. Just trust and hope for the best. This is one of my favorites things to love about your long distance relationship. You learn how to trust your partner so much, small things don’t bother you anymore.

2. YOU HAVE MORE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Relationships consume a lot of time, and I don’t say that as a bad thing. Spending your time with your significant other is an amazing thing. After all, we are with that person because we love to spend the time together. But at the same time, it’s good to have a balance between every aspect of your life. Your friends, family, school, work, and even your hobbies. Being in a long distance relationship makes that balance so much easier to achieve.

And even though you are doing something else, you can still be in contact via text message. Just remember that if your partner isn’t answering…  he or she is not avoiding you. They are just doing something else. I have to admit that I had a hard time understanding that when my boyfriend started working. We had more time when we both were in school and that suddenly changed. From getting texts throughout the day, to only certain times a day. The change was hard, but I learned to love the extra time to do something else.

3. YOU MASTER YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS

I have written about this issue many times. We all know how easily can be to misunderstand someone’s text message. This is something everybody can relate. It happens with friends, co-workers, literally everyone. We depend on emojis, and if we don’t use them, we risk sounding rude or upset. While in a long distance relationship the last things we want is, start a fight over something so silly, like sounding too rude in your message.

So after two years in this relationship, I have learned how to communicate my feelings and how to write them. Yes, I might be upset witing a message, but I have to add that extra smiley face because we aren’t together to work it out. And I don’t want to make it worst.

It takes times to understand it, but you learn eventually. Keeping your arguments to the minimum is the best. Although… we all know how hard that can be. Even if we try hard, even if we are conscious of it, we forget it. Or we are so into the argument, we choose not to remember it.

7 Things To Love About Your Long Distance Relationship. Relationship tips. LDR. Long distance relationships. Elephant on the Road.

4. CREATIVE WAYS TO SHOW YOUR LOVE

I love this part! I’m a very creative and crafty person and I’m always looking for new projects to work on and give them to my boyfriend. I have to add too, he loves everything I make. But I don’t only mean giving physical gifts (we can’t forget about how expensive shipping those gifts can be). Saying I love you over text can turn very monotone and meaningless. And you can think, okay then, how do I say I love you without saying it if the person is not with me to show it? That’s a great question! Because I always think about that too.

What do we do? That will depend on every person. I used to send my boyfriend small videos of me singing love songs or any song for that matter. We call them concerts and they are so much fun! Find little things to share with your significant other. It will make the relationship less monotonous.

5. WHO SAID TRAVELING?

Even if the distance is a few hours. You have to move to another city to see your significant other. For me, it means I have to travel to another country. Which can be expensive, but since I love traveling, I tried not to be upset about that issue.

Exploring new cities with my boyfriend it’s so fun! And being a tourist in your hometown is also something I always enjoy. For sure, this is one of the best things to love about your long distance relationship. It’s a great opportunity to do new things with your boyfriend or girlfriend.

6. DISTANCE STRAIGHTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Yes. There are moments when you don’t know what to do. Or moments when you ask yourself if you should keep going, not sure if the relationship is going somewhere. But once you pass those bad thoughts, things start to look brighter. With all the problems that come with long-distance relationships, something that I always remember is how lucky I am to go through this. Because it brings so many benefits to the relationship in the long run that it makes me feel grateful too.

7. YOU REALIZE HOW STRONG (AND PATIENT) YOU ARE

During the two years I’ve been in a long distance relationship, I’ve grown as a person. I feel and see the difference in me between before starting this relationship and after. For me, all good changes. I learned many things about me; one of them, realizing how patient I am. Also, how persistent I can be when I really want something.

And this is something I really want to highlight in this post about the things to love about your long distance relationship. It is so difficult to be far away from your significant other; and we are so focused on making the relationship work, that sometimes we forget about us. About how long distance relationships change us.

So what do you think about this post? Is there something else you love about long distance relationships? Let me know in the comments!

SINCERELY,
MELISSA

What is ICO?

ico

What is ICO?

ICO also known als crowd sale, token sale or crowdfunding is smilar to IPO, but you don’t get shares. Instead you get cryptocurrencies with the possibility to get dividends like the coin Dash does. It’s a way to raise money for your startup to be able to run this project, you are raising for. Unlike IPO it is not regulated, so the failure rate is pretty high. Some says, that on the long run only 10% of the cryptocurrencies will survive. The 1st ICO ever was in 2014, where Ethereum could raise about $2,2m. Last year was a popular year for ICOs, because there were more than 1000s new ICOs. Unfortenately about 50% of it already failed. It also happened sometimes, that those ICOs were scams, where the scammer collected the money and just ran away. That’s why in the US, EU and South Korea they plan to regulate it. China even banned it. Most recently Telegram could raise about $850b for its ICO. Some are speculating, that Amazon would do its own ICO, which would have a way bigger impact on the cryptocurrency market.

On their website you can see the team members sometimes with its advisors. From there you can have an impression, whether they might be able to push through their project. Besides there is a also a white paper describing their project more deeply with a roadmap to see their plan for the future. Most of them are based on Ethereum blockchain with ERC20 standard. To be able to take part in it, you mostly have to buy Ethereum or Bitcoin. With your Ethereum coins you will buy their cryptocurrencies. For example 1 Ethereum is worth 1000 ICO cryptos. So you don’t directly buy their cryptocurrencies with fiat money like $ or €, but you have to buy with another cryptocurrency instead.

Travel – 10 Tips on how to survive a long flight

Travel

By Ania Travels

We’ve all been there, we sit online browsing through flights hours on end, again and again, calculating what’s the shortest time I can be on a plane for the cheapest price. Ask to be seated in the back

This is one of my favorite hacks when flying. When you go to check in at the counter ask them to seat you all the way in the back. People usually want to sit up from so they can get off the plane quicker, but you’ll be smart and sit in the back. The back is usually less crowded and I’ve scored full rows to myself by doing this. Even if you can’t score a full row, there are usually empty seats around and there’s more wiggle room to move around and pick a seat of your choosing.

Catch up on your beauty rest + consider a sleeping aid

Because I travel so much, people always think that I’m jet legged since I change time zones so much. But tell you the truth I rarely get jet lagged. This is because I sleep on my long flights to pass up the time zone. When you do this make sure you calculate how much sleep you need. What I like to do is look at the time of my arrival and work backward. If I land in the middle of the day I know I have to get some sleep so I can stay up when I land and go to bed at a normal time. But if I land in the evening I know I can’t sleep too long because then I’ll be up all night. Calculate it the right way and you can completely avoid jet lag.

You might have problems sleeping on planes though. I’m the complete opposite, I actually suffer from insomnia, but on flights I can sleep, must have something to do with being thousands of feet up in the air. But if you’re not as lucky, consider taking a natural sleeping aid so you can catch up on your sleep. Be careful though, test out how you react to the sleep aid before you fly, sleeping pills do act differently in your body at a higher altitude.

Bring something to do

You’re going to be on this plane for 10+ hours. Bring something fun to do to entertain yourself. Most long flights do have in-flight entertainment now which is amazing, but I’ve also been on flights where I’ve watched all of the movies, or my tv screen doesn’t work. I like to download a couple movies from Netflix onto my phone and download a book or two onto my kindle I also make sure that my laptop is fully charged so I can get at least a couple hours of work done.

Stay hydrated

I can’t stress enough how important water is while you travel. Traveling, in general, dehydrates you, but when you’re up thousands of feet above ground where the air is extra dry will dehydrate you even more. What I like to do is bring a refillable water bottle with me, fill it up at the airport, and purchase another bottle of water at the airport. This eliminates having to ask the flight attendant for water every 30 minutes.

Bring snacks

I’m a HUGE snacker!!! I’m pretty much eating all day every day, and the same goes while I’m traveling. Let’s face it the food on the flights suck, and airport food gets pricey. So bring some TSA friendly snacks and eat whenever you get hungry. Some of my favorites snacks to bring on board include the RX BarsOrchard Valley Nut MixVeggie CrispsMini Lara Bars, and Sahale Snacks Nut Blends.

Befriend the crew

The crewmembers deal with difficult people all day long, the last thing they want is another person being difficult. A simple thank you and smile goes a long way. But the extra mile is even better. When I purchase my snacks to bring on board I usually bring a few extras and give them to the crewmembers. They’re stuck eating airplane food most of the time too, so they really appreciate it. I know a few people who have also make goodie-bags for the crewmembers. If you do this it will definitely be appreciated, might even score you an upgrade or other special treatment.

Wear comfortable clothes

I’ve literally seen some women get on a 10+ hour flight in full makeup, heels, and dresses. Like woman WHAT ARE YOU DOING???? Be comfortable!!! You’re going to be stuck in this tube for the next 10+ hours, don’t you want to be as comfortable as possible? Your body naturally swells up while you travel also, so wearing loose clothes won’t leave you gasping for air at the end of your flight.

Bring a scarf

Flights get cold! Something about being so high off the ground that they just need to crank the air up on every single flight you ever take. Bring a scarf and layer up. Scarves are great too because you can use them as a blanket, as a pillow, put it over your face when you sleep, and when you’re traveling they’re great to cover your shoulders at churches/temples. Check out this awesome scarf that not only covers you up, but also has a hidden pocket to keep your money/passport safe.

Move! Move! Move! (and do a little happy dance)

You are on that plane for 10+ hours, that is a long time to be sitting in a tiny little seat for so long. So stand up, walk the isles, move around a little in your seat, or put on some great music and do a little dance in your seat.

Keep it fresh

Keep all of your essentials on you. You are there for a long time so you’ll probably want to freshen up. I always keep a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, and deodorant with me on a long flight.
