So if you are trying to get ranked with the keyword SEO, it is not very likely, that you will get any traffic from it, because it is very difficult to get ranked for it. This tool even shows, you on the first sight, how many visitors the 1st ranked website gets for the keyword SEO. It gets 183 000 visitors per month regularly, which is pretty impressive, because it is only 1 blog article. This website has many blog articles!

There is also a HTML validator to see, whether your code is well written. It shows you for example, that you don’t have alt tags in your picture etc. Webmasters, website owners have access to the file. It is mostly index.html file.

With Google Search console, you can find out, which website links back to you and then you can find out, what their PageAuthority is to know, whether you want to dissavow it or not.

As there’s clearly too much ad revenue potential to ignore, Facebook today announced it’s reversing its cryptocurrency ad ban effective immediately. The decision comes with a few caveats, however. The company says it will allow ads and related content from “pre-approved advisers,” but will still not allow ads promoting binary options and initial coin offerings.

Facebook had first enacted the ban in January, saying at the time that too many companies in this space were “not currently operating in good faith.”

While it admitted that banning all crypto advertising was a broad change, the company said that its new policy would “improve the integrity and security of our ads, and to make it harder for scammers to profit from a presence on Facebook.”

But it had also said the policy would be revisited over time, as its ability to protect deceptive ads improved. Fast forward six months, and apparently Facebook is ready for the crypto ad onslaught yet again.

This time around, it’s making advertisers go through an application process to determine their eligibility. Facebook will ask advertisers to include on their applications details like what licenses they’ve obtained, whether they’re a publicly traded company, and other relevant background information regarding their business. How thoroughly this information is fact-checked by Facebook staff remains unclear.

The company reminded users in the same announcement that they should continue to flag ad content that violates its guidelines. In other words, expect some bad ads to get through.

Facebook explains its new requirements will keep some crypto advertisers from being able to hawk their businesses on the social network, but adds that its policy in this area continues to be a work in progress.

“…We’ll listen to feedback, look at how well this policy works and continue to study this technology so that, if necessary, we can revise it over time,” says Rob Leathern, Product Management Director, in Facebook’s announcement.

Facebook’s original decision to ban crypto ads was followed by Google in March, when the company cited the “unregulated” and “speculative” nature of many of the advertised products. Its new policy begin this month. Twitter and Snap also have some policies around crypto ads, with Twitter only showing ads for exchanges and wallets provided by publicly traded companies and Snap allowing crypto ads but banning those for ICOs.

The crypto industry is rife with scams, so it makes sense that these major platforms would need some rules around what’s allowed. According to the FTC, consumers lost $532 million to cryptocurrency-related scams in the first two months of 2018, Coindesk reported on Monday. And an agency official warned that consumers will lose more than $3 billion by the end of the year. Facebook says the full crypto ad ban is lifted today for approved advertisers.

How much does SEO cost?

How much does SEO cost? SEO is not as easy to nail down as, say, sending out a direct mail campaign to 100 recipients. In some ways, it is not always as easy to measure, as many marketing activities may impact organic search traffic.

The cost of SEO is also directly related to the potential rewards. Ranking nationally for a highly prized keyword that may be £10 per click in AdWords will have far more costs associated with it than ranking for a locally oriented keyword. But even on a local level, there can be huge variability — and whether you want to rank in a state, county, city, town or micro-area like a borough or village will influence how difficult this will be. This, of course, influences the price of SEO for your unique situation.

In this post, I am going to look briefly at the benefits of organic search via SEO to better frame the question, how much does SEO cost? My goal here is to help you make an educated decision regarding how much you should be investing and how you measure results.

Whether you are a local business, small business, national business or even international business, I hope this guide will help you determine what your investment should look in organic search.

SEO prices: What determines SEO cost?
SEO pricing has to consider the following variables:

Situation. Where are you currently?
Objectives. Where do you want to be?
Timeline. How fast do you want to improve?
Only by looking at these three elements can any agency calculate how much SEO cost should for your business.

Let’s consider the following example:

A local business site currently ranks in the 12th position for their main target keyword (and variations thereof).
Competitors on first page have more links and higher authority metrics.
Competitors have invested more in local SEO.
With this information, some metrics can be determined:

An approximate amount of links
An idea of how much work is needed on the local SEO front
A rough timeline to achieve this
By analyzing a client’s current situation, understanding their objectives and determining the required timeline, we can calculate a price. There are lots of variables here, and we don’t always know what our competitors are doing, but an attempt should be made to calculate the level of work required and subsequent price.

And of course, the industry will in part determine SEO costs. If you make $100 from a new customer, you can expect to pay less than if a customer is worth several thousand dollars. The marketplace, to some extent, regulates price (assuming the work is done properly). It is all about return on investment.

The last variable is maintenance and keeping your flag flying once visibility has been achieved. SEO is a moving target. You step up your game, and the competition does the same. It’s tough, and the best approaches need to be tailored to the unique situation and goals of the business.

This is why simple SEO KPIs like keyword rankings are not enough, and a more considered approach to measuring SEO success is almost always required to track progress.

High-quality SEO vs. cheap and nasty
Which brings us to the other key variable here: quality. A little story here may help illustrate the qualitative issues that still abound in the SEO industry.

This week, a local PPC client of ours called us up and detailed a sales call they had received from a local SEO firm. This firm was trying to sell them SEO and detailed the process that they would use to build backlinks. The gist of this process was to find relevant websites that had expired, buy those sites, and then place content on them that links to the target site.

This is essentially a PBN (Private Blog Network), a network of sites that is under the control of a single entity (in this case, the SEO company) and used to artificially build links. This approach has many names: link farm, link network, blog network and so on. This is what Google would classify as a link scheme, and it’s something they have been targeting with manual penalties and algorithmic adjustments since 2014.

Thing is, this client was sold. They wanted it. After all, it sounded too good to be true. But when things sound too good to be true, they often are. Really, alarm bells should have been ringing when this supposed SEO company was doing speculative telesales. But that is a whole other story.

The point here is that there are services in the UK that offer SEO for £50 ($65) per quarter. Or £15 a month. Realistically, what kind of marketing can be done for £15 a month? These services are either doing nothing or utilizing owned networks of sites to add links.

At best, they are largely ineffective. At worst, you could end up with a penalty or some form of negative equity. Cheap, yes. Nasty, most definitely. If you are building a long-term business, you don’t want to focus on these bottom-of-the-barrel strategies.

The takeaway here is that you are responsible for what is done in your name. If you employ a cheap SEO company and don’t do the research, then this will be very much your problem when things don’t work (or you are penalized).

If you are building a business, you need to play by the rules of the biggest marketing platform out there. And the rules are not always terribly clear. But think in terms of value and common sense, and you won’t fall foul of the thousands of frankly unethical, back-street SEO companies out there.

It is not all bad news, though. There are over 5 million small businesses in the UK and around 30 million in the US, and the majority of these have really poor SEO. So, the barrier to entry here is often not terribly steep. Just remember the four variables of situation, objectives, speed and quality.

Enough already! How much does SEO Cost?
Caveats aside. The following is based on our experience and the studies we have been able to plunder to get some data.

SEO prices in the US

There is more data out there regarding SEO prices in the US than in the UK. Moz published the results of a survey on SEO providers that included pricing, and it showed a huge range of monthly pricing. These prices are not specific to small businesses, but still, they give us an idea.

Survey Question: For those clients you service with ongoing/multi-month contracts, what is the average client’s monthly billing?

10% — less than $500
27% — $500-1,000
29% — $1,000-2,500
20% — $2,500-5,000
15% — $5,000-10,000
There is a lot of variation out there, but the majority of businesses are spending less than $5,000 per month on SEO in the US based on this survey. Forty percent of these people are spending less than $1,000, which is where the truly small businesses and startups often lie. Remember, these prices likely map to the level of difficulty and scope of the project. Those paying less than $500 per month are probably local businesses!

There is no study as such, but being at the helm of an SEO and PPC agency and having worked with thousands of businesses over the years, I do have some insight into what pricing looks like.

£50-£150 per month — low-end SEO (or low competition)
£150-£300 per month — mid-range small business SEO
£300-£500 per month — more competitive mid-range SEO
£500-£1,000 per month — high-end small business SEO (usually a national business)
£1,000-£2,000 per month — high-quality for competitive industries
£2,000 upwards per month — high-value businesses with content-led SEO approach. Typically a national or multi location business.
In practice, what we see is that the general street-level SEO companies tend to work from £300 upwards. Then there are some online small business SEO providers that work from around £50 to £150 per month. It is hard to know what some of these actually do to add value.

What should you be spending?

The prices above are all relative, though. If you are a small but national business in a competitive space, then you are going to need to pay more for SEO than a small business in a local space. Think e-commerce online store versus a local plumber. The size of your market and potential profit will to some extent dictate what you should be spending to be in the running.

So, what should you pay? How do you determine the value of SEO? The only true answer to this question lies in your business and current situation. If profits are big, expect more competition. If profit is low, then typically, there will be less competition. If you have a long way to go, expect to pay more than if you just need a final push into the top three.

Ensure that your provider explains to you how they calculated which service(s) you need, and avoid the very low end of the marketplace, as the automation required to deliver SEO at $50 per month or some such will often lead to problems down the road.

The above mainly looks at the monthly costs of SEO assuming a well-optimized website is already in place. If that is not the case, you may need to consider the costs to build an SEO-friendly website. Your website is your home online and is central to your SEO efforts. A well-optimized website platform that delivers amazing usability for mobile users is crucial. This can be a big investment, but a website that is not built with search and happy users in mind is an SEO wooden leg.

ROI: Why ‘How much does SEO cost?’ is not the right question
At the end of the day, return on investment (ROI) is what matters. If a lead costs you $20 from paid search, $15 from social ads or $5 from organic search, then organic is a highly valuable channel which offers the best overall return on investment.

Measuring these factors is not always easy but is absolutely essential to understanding what the return is on all your digital marketing activities. SEO Case Study 2018: How Long Does It Take To Rank [And Improve Google Search Ranking Quickly]

We recently did an interesting case study on a blog post to see how long did it take to get first page rankings for our primary keyword.

So we’ll talk about several things here:

  • Important data of the keyword we ranked for
  • The date of publishing the post we used in this SEO case study
  • The amount of search traffic the post got until now
  • How many keywords the post is currently getting traffic from
  • Current keyword position for the keyword (along with position changes)
  • How many days it took to get #2 rankings for our target keyword
  • And other interesting and important details along with screenshots
  • So you’re in a treat. Here we go!

    Important Data Of The Keyword We Ranked For

    The keyword we targeted has a monthly search volume of 1300 searches (which is not too low and not very difficult to rank for). So here are some interesting data that gives you a better idea about how long does it take to rank for a keyword in the first page results on Google.

    • Monthly search volume of the keyword: 1300 searches
    • Date of publishing the post: 17th Feb 2018
    • Total visitors the post received in 3 months after publishing: 5477 visitors
    • Total number of social shares the post received: 93 (so far)
    • How long did it take to get into the first page results of Google: 52 days

    Now, let’s dive into further more details so you can understand this SEO case study even better to improve keyword rankings.

    The Date Of Publishing The Blog Post

    For privacy reasons, we are not going to reveal the primary keyword we used for this case study (so we blurred it).

    Besides revealing the keyword, we’re going to reveal every other data which is useful enough for you to know how long does it usually take to rank for a keyword so you’ll have better understanding about how to improve Google search ranking in 2018 and beyond.

    The date of publishing the blog post that we used for this SEO case study was: 17th February 2018.

    Interesting thing to notice

    You can’t get #1 ranking for keyword with decent search volume within a day or two unless you’ve an authority site with a lot of quality links.

    How Many Visitors The Post Attracted In The Last 90 Days

    If you’re wondering about how much traffic the post attracted from Google in the last 90 days, here’s the data from Google search console.

  • Google Search Console Screen showing the amount of clicks this post received in the last 90 days:search metrics newAs you can see above, the post attracted around 5500 visitors from Google in the last 90 days.

    That’s not a bad number. Considering the fact that the post was published just 100 days ago and already attracted over 5000 unique visitors from Google.

    If you look at the above graph carefully, the average number of clicks are also increasing every single week (which is a good sign that it’s going to attract even more search traffic).

    How Many Keywords The Post Is Currently Getting Traffic From

    If you’re curious to find out the number of keywords the post is currently getting traffic from Google, it is ranking for for 69 keywords.

    Here’s the screenshot from SEMrush (US) Ranking for its targeted terms:

    If you observe the above screenshot carefully (which was taken from SEMrush), you’ll notice a couple of important things about this SEO case study for 2018 to improve Google rankings.

    • The number of keywords: As you can clearly see from the above screenshot from SEMrush, the blog post we are using for this SEO case study is ranking for 69 keywords. This is important to know because we mainly focused on just ONE primary keyword.
    • The average positions for each keyword: Most of the keywords are ranking on first 3 top search results (see the above screenshot) which is the primary reason for generating more traffic from search. 

      Important thing to notice

      If you’re ranking #1 for a keyword, you’ll tend to rank for a ton of other relevant keywords as well. The above illustration shows the same thing.

      In fact, Ahrefs did an interesting case study on how many keywords can you rank for one page and revealed some of the amazing facts.

      What did you learn from it? The average #1 ranking page will also rank in the top 10 for nearly 1,000 other relevant keywords while the median value is more than two times smaller which is around 400 keywords. That’s a great news, right?

      How awesome it is to rank #1 for a keyword and get search traffic from a ton of other keywords as well. That’s why it’s so important for you to get #1 ranking for a keyword that you’re targeting.

      Total Number Of Backlinks The Post Received

      Whether you know it or not, backlinks play a KEY role in getting #1 rankings for any keyword no matter what industry you are in. So let’s use this interesting SEO case study to find out how many backlinks (along with domains) that our target keyword attracted.

      As you can see from the above screenshot, you’ll notice the following things;

      • Total links to the post: The post attracted 68 links so far (some of them are dofollow and few are nofollow). We left 20 to 30 blog comments using the post URL though, remaining links we attracted organically.
      • Total domains linking to the post: The 68 backlinks are generated from 18 unique domains (18 different websites linked to the post). You should know the importance of attracting links from various domains to the same post instead of building tons of links from the same domain.Important thing to rememberMost people who are new to SEO have a common question: “Can I rank for a keyword without backlinks”?

        That’s a great question and the answer is mostly NO.

        You can’t get #1 rankings for a keyword without the help of backlinks. Even if you got #1 rankings for a keyword, you can’t sustain first page rankings without building links. It’s as simple as that.

        Just have a look at the following illustration by Moz case study where they examined the top 50 Google search results for approximately over 15,000 keywords which allowed them to examine not only what factors correlate with higher search rankings but also how frequently those characteristics are seen.

        Out of the top 50 search results, 99.2% of all websites had at least one external link. 

        The remaining 0.8% is well within the margin of error expected between Mozscape and Google’s own link index.

        The study found almost no websites ranking for competitive search phrases that didn’t have at least a single external link pointing at them and most had significantly more links which directly telling us all the importance of backlinks.

        So the bottomline? If you want to get #1 rankings for any keyword, start attracting links from other sources.

        Total Number Of Social Shares The Post Received So Far

        The people who are already into SEO know one thing for sure: social media engagement plays a crucial role in getting better rankings on Google search.

        That means, if your blog posts generate decent amount of social shares such as Facebook shares, Tweets, G plus shares and so on, it tends to get first page rankings on Google.

        So let’s now discuss about the social shares the post we’re talking in this SEO case study got so far.

        Social Shares: Combining Facebook, Twitter & G Plus

      • total shares postAs you can see, the post was shared over 90 times across 3 social media platforms and here are some interesting things to notice:Number of Facebook shares: The post received over 60 times on Facebook, which means, it performed well on Facebook when compared to other networks like Twitter or G plus. Primarily the reason is we share it on our Facebook page and also most bloggers that follow Bloggers Passion are active on Facebook when compared to other networks. Number of Tweets: It also got a fair amount of tweets although we are not so much active on Twitter. Primarily the reason for these tweets could be the people who are reading the particular blog post were most active on Twitter. Google Plus shares: Google plus usage is going down day by day with the increase presence of people on Facebook and Twitter.

        Important thing to remember

        Did you know that the number of social shares you get on your articles impact your search engine rankings? Yes, that’s true.

        Although getting 100 odd shares won’t make much difference in your search rankings but if you want to get first page rankings, you should definitely focus on getting more social shares because search engines like Google considers “user engagement” such as social sharing as a ranking factor.

        According to Searchmetrics 2016 Rebooting Ranking Factors White Paper, here’s what you need to know about the correlation between social media and ranking of your keywords.

        “The correlation between social signals and ranking position is extremely high and the number of social signals per landing page has remained constant when compared to with the values from last year’s whitepaper. The top ranked websites in Google’s rankings displays vastly more social signals than all other pages. This is primarily due to the overlap between brand websites performing strongly in social networks and being allocated top positions by Google.”

        So what can you take away from the above? Yes, social media can certainly help with SEO.

        There is a positive correlation between social engagements and change in keyword rankings. So if you want to boost your keyword rankings on Google, focus on getting more social shares.

10 Tricks and Tips for Landing Your First Client:
Quitting your corporate job and launching your dream startup is only half the battle. Finding people to actually use your product or service is the real fight.

Like many startup founders, when I started my business in 1999, I was wildly optimistic about my startup’s potential. I assumed that if I had a great product or service, then clients would somehow magically appear. Let’s just say this didn’t happen. Having no clue about sales and marketing, I hired a full-time staff – many I ended up laying off.

Since then I’ve had multiple opportunities to “start over” again with my most recent venture taking me to Hong Kong. During my journey, I have learned many lessons about landing that all important first client. Here are a few tips on nabbing your first customer and the next few as well.

Startup tips

1. Give yourself some runway. Many promising companies fail because they don’t have the resources to last long enough to get things going. How long can you last without any clients or income? The more cash you have in the bank, the lower your risk will be and the higher your chances of success. I recommend starting with 6 to 12 months of operating expenses on hand.

2. Talk to everyone you know. Sending an email out to everyone you know announcing your new business is all fine and good but talking one on one to the few individuals who can truly help you is better. When you approach people don’t ask them for their business. Instead ask them for advice on how to get their business or the business of those they can refer you to.

3. Get involved in your community. People generally do business with people they like and trust. Deals get done at kids soccer games, through religious affiliations or via relationships formed in volunteer organizations. Of course you don’t want to be the guy everyone knows as being involved in the community for his own self-serving ends. Focus on being a good member of the community first, and business opportunities will naturally come to you without needing to be forced.

4. Get involved in the business community. When I first arrived in Hong Kong I went to every business event I could find. I identified those who were doing the most to help Hong Kong’s entrepreneurial scene grow and then I offered to help wherever I could. I have received quite a bit in return.

5. Collaborate with competitors. If you view every competitor as an enemy or a rival to be defeated, you’ll miss out on some of your greatest opportunities. One of the first things I did upon moving to Hong Kong was to identify competitors and reach out to them. More than half of them told me upon our first meeting that they frequently had projects they were too busy to handle and asked if I’d be interesting in taking their surplus business. Last week I met with a competitor. As a result we are organizing a series of training and education events for executives to learn more about online marketing. Together we will be able to have greater reach than either of us could get working separately.

6. Get social online. Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn offer excellent opportunities to connect with the various communities that may be interested in your services. But social media can also suck up a lot of your time, so use it wisely. I start online conversations by posting on my blog about entrepreneurship and marketing, quoting experts who will share the content and then sharing the content via social media.

7. Optimize your website. I tell my firm’s clients all the time that it’s going to take months of SEO before they start getting sales or leads from their website. That’s generally the way it works, but sometimes it can happen quite a bit faster. We started getting leads from our the Hong Kong version of our website within a few weeks of launching it.

8. Speak. Many organizations, such as chambers of commerce, like to bring in speakers who can share something new with their members. Often these organizations are desperate to find someone to present and all it takes is making contact and offering to share what you know.

The state California has a higher GDP than UK, which makes the world 5th biggest economy, although it has only 40 million population compared to the 65 million people in UK. A very productive state. Sillicon Valley itself has 2 million people. The name silicon refers to its industry it focuses on.

It is the world biggest startup hub with 8 billion investment from VCs, which is about half of all US VC investments. Many IT companies started from there like Intel, Google, Facebook etc. US Americans have a very good sense of doing business. It’s not only in high tech, they are striving in, but also in food. They are also able to sell worldwide burgers, fries, coffee, pizza etc. #McDonald’s #Starbucks #PizzaHut etc.

One of the remarkable cases, that YouTube in 2005 received $11.5 by Sequoia Capital and a year later it was sold to Google for $1.65 billion. A more recent case was with Instagram. In 2010 it got funded with half million $. After adding their app in the app store, it got $7 million funding in 2011. A year later it released an Android app and got $50 million of funding and soon enough Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion. US Americans really know, how to do business. A famous startup accelerator Y combinator doesn’t even look at your business plan, if you don’t have a cofounder. Why? Because they know, that it is way more likely, that you fail without a cofounder. Besides Sillicon Valley has a famous university called Stanford, which is ranked a 2nd best university right after Havard.

They have the technology. They have the knowledge, the right mindset in order to succeed. Failure is inevitable, so they are not afraid to take the risk. Calculated risk to invest in it. Thanks to that, there are many great companies out there providing great products and services to the world e.g. the iPhone, Google, Facebook etc. that is able to disrupt many industries. Maybe that’s why the US the world immigration country, because it is not the case in other countries. For example Fred DeLuca. At that time he was 17 years old and he wanted to attend college. To be able to pay tuition fees, he came up the idea to sell sandwiches. At that time he sold 50 cents for each sub and he could sell many hundreds per day. Now according to Subway is the world largest restaurant chain. So no prior work experience or knowledge about the industry. He could make it. Here is another success story. US Americans cherish entrepreneurship. That’s why, they are ready to invest into startups. Not a little bit with millions of USD. For example YouTube. During its beginning in 2005, it received 11.5 million USD from a venture capitalist. And there you see. After 1 year, it got bought for $1.65 billion. For sure there is a downside of entrepreneurship. Even a big one. Over 90% of startups will fail on the long run, but US Americans regard people still trying out entrepreneurship as courageous, which is not the case in other countries. Although US is also known as a land of opportunities, it only rewards business people financially and not a regular worker.

If you want to try your luck to realize your American Dream, your best bet is to have a business mindset and the urge to make money like Fred DeLuca had or the urge to change the world like Steve Jobs had. In general, the more backlinks you have, the better it is and the higher quality the backlinks are, the better it is, too, but what are high quality backlinks again? It’s a link from a website with high PageRank score. Its score is from 0 to 10. 10 is the highest score to achieve. For example Wikipedia has a PageRank of 9. So getting a backlink from a website with such a high PageRank is very very recommendable and it worth more than many backlinks of lower PageRank. Besides the backlink has to come from a website, which is related to your blog niche. If you are writing about travel, but the backlink comes from a website/blog about marketing, it won’t be as valuable as backlinks from more related websites/blogs. Now, here comes some link building methods:

  1. Media. Especially infographics gets shared way more often than just plain text articles. I’ve also done an infographic. Check it out on this blog article: What is SEO?
  2. Guest blog. Write an article for another blogger. Especially a well established one is very beneficial.
  3. Competitors. You can look at your competitors, where they get their backlinks from and do the same thing as they did.
  4. List yourself in directories. CrunchBase is one of many popular directories to get listed.
  5. Use social share buttons, so it is easier to get shared.
